San Pedro North

Northern San Pedro, the less populated and more nature-rich part of Ambergris Caye, offers visitors a mix of unique attractions, pristine beaches, and exciting adventures. While it retains the island’s laid-back charm, Northern San Pedro is also a hub for exploration and entertainment, appealing to those looking for both relaxation and discovery.

For many years, development on the northern portion of the island was severely limited due to a river dividing the north from the main portion of town. The only means of crossing the river was a manually operated ferry which was pulled by hand. In 2006, however a bridge was built at the Boca del Rio area, connecting San Pedro Town to the northern portion of the island.

The bridge was originally made of wooden planks and hot-dipped galvanized steel, and was primarily intended for pedestrians and golf carts. However, large vehicles like cargo trucks and construction machinery began using the bridge to access the island’s northern side, which put stress on the structure. The bridge was left in poor condition, and had to be rebuilt beginning in 2021. The new bridge is a two-lane concrete structure with wider railings, lighting, and flowerpots between the lanes.

The Truck Stop

A favorite among both locals and tourists, The Truck Stop is a lively and creative gathering spot. It’s not just a restaurant—it’s an outdoor food park with shipping containers converted into food stalls, each serving a different cuisine. You’ll find everything from wood-fired pizzas to Asian street food, as well as craft cocktails and local beers. The Truck Stop hosts live music, movie nights, and family-friendly events, making it the perfect place to spend an evening. Its social atmosphere and variety of dining options make it one of Northern San Pedro’s most popular spots.

Secret Beach

Further up the coast, Secret Beach has evolved from being a local secret to a must-see destination for visitors. Located on the western side of Ambergris Caye, this idyllic beach offers clear, shallow waters perfect for swimming and relaxing. Despite its growing popularity, Secret Beach maintains a serene atmosphere, with calm waters and stunning views of the setting sun. There are numerous beach bars and grills, allowing you to enjoy food and drinks while lounging by the water. For those seeking water activities, you can rent paddleboards, kayaks, or even take a boat tour to explore the surrounding area.

Bacalar Chico Marine and Wildlife Reserve

For nature lovers and adventurers, the Bacalar Chico Marine and Wildlife Reserve is one of the highlights of Northern Ambergris Caye. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located at the northern tip of the island, bordering Mexico, and is home to diverse ecosystems, including coral reefs, mangroves, and lagoons. The reserve is a haven for snorkeling and diving, offering vibrant marine life like sea turtles, rays, and colorful coral formations. On land, the reserve is home to numerous species of birds and other wildlife, making it ideal for eco-tourism.
